Intro to Energy Flow Meditation

I teach a class called “Inner Energy Yoga and Meditation” at the Unity Center in Palo Alto, California. But what I’m really teaching is Energy Flow Meditation— the perfect meditation for busy minds.

What I call “Energy Flow Meditation” has its roots in the practices of Tantra Yoga and Raja Yoga. It’s about experiencing the flow of internal energy (aka kundalini, chi, or prana, depending on your background) in both large amounts in the central channel/spine and smaller amounts elsewhere in the body.

Energy Flow Meditation isn’t just something you do, it’s something you enjoy. Because you enjoy it, you do it regularly. And because you do it regularly, you get the benefits meditation is known for: Stress relief, a calmer disposition, more positive outlook, a happier life, and more.

It combines the Asian tradition of chi (internal energy) with the traditions of pranayama (breathwork) and chakras (energy centers) from India. And as a former athlete and coach, it focuses on practical, usable techniques that work.

Because it combines breathing and internal energy activations, it falls under the banner of Kriya Yoga practices. (Karma Yoga is about external actions for the benefit of others. Hatha Yoga is about externally visible actions that benefit yourself. Kriya Yoga is about internal actions that benefit yourself — actions that are invisible to onlookers, but powerful and effective.)

The class I teach runs 8 weeks. The goal is to leave you with a practice you can do, and want to do. The first half of the course focuses on breathwork and posture, the second half on internal…
